DIY Closet Demo & Reach-Inspiration

It’s week 2 of my 2nd One Room Challenge and things are happening. I am not overly impressed with the progress that’s been made but it IS progress so that deserves a little gratefulness moment!

The biggest project within this project is the closet. It’s getting expanded by siphoning off some of the nursery’s closet. That is the one area which was completely ignored for my first ORC because I wasn’t ready for it. And now I know why!

Our two closets are nearly identical and share the same little 10’x2′ nook in the house, so this past week was spent tearing that out and patching up giant nail holes. It was divided as 2 5′ closets with one shelf and one rod each, and my plan is to make his a mini 40″ closet and claim the remaining 80 inches as ours. There will be more than 1 shelf (!!!) and the 58″ of hanging space is getting doubled.

Here is the current state. Literally a shell.

Before this all started, I “shrunk” his closet door by building a new wall (first time for me😎). Now I have the space to move our little partition wall down and maybe even add a secret door? Alice in Wonderland style? I’m gunning for some cool mom points.

Once that is up I’ll need to build another wall extension on the left side of my closet to make a cubby for some 10″ shelves and tear out some of the right side’s wall. I’m not thrilled about this part because 1. the walls are plastered and it is a friggin’ dust BOMB, 2. you never know what you’re going to find behind old walls like this, 3. we sleep here. πŸ˜‘

Don’t mind the floppy tape. It was up to help me visualize (and help tano get used to the idea).

I have some exciting inspiration photos to share and they are serving up enough “it will be worth it” vibes.

I love the idea of this perpendicular rod in the cubby.

That hanging cubby gets me soooo excited because we have a ton of hanging storage I want to tuck away, and I’m hoping to add a drawer or two under one of the “long” hanging areas.

Just looking forward to having a more efficient space to store things. Per usual.

Other room updates

My ceiling light came! And it’s being sent back. I didn’t even open it, and honestly decided against it almost immediately after making the purchase. It’s too small and too…. much. Instead I’m opting for something more traditional. My thought process is that I can justify other loud choices that way. Ha!

On that note Overstock.com has my least favorite return policy and I have to pay for shipping, but it was very sale when I bought it (which is why I bought it…).

The headboard is still a debate in my head and I think I’ll need to mix up my rug choice too. It’s a whole issue I’ve cooked up while procrastinating the ongoing closet disaster, but when the time comes I’ll be going with my gut and completely neglecting my planning side. πŸ™ƒ
