“What did you do about postpartum hair loss?” is a question I get often. My hair actually thrived postpartum and I regularly get compliments from hairdressers out in the wild(!?). I have a postpartum hair loss remedy up my sleeve and feel like it is… controversial. But hey! It works for me and they are easy & free!!
Spoiler alert: it’s written in the same vain as The Best Low Maintenance Haircuts for Moms which meansssss it’s no nonsense.
Don’t come for me on these, ok? I’m just sharing what I do to minimize hair loss and keep the ends healthy postpartum. And at least I’m not trying to sell you some crazy trick right?! Also, it literally can’t hurt your hair. I’m actually very excited for you to try it.
the easiest postpartum hair loss remedy: less is more
My hair loss secret is less about what I do and more about what I don’t do.
Do not wash your hair everyday
I give it at LEAST 3 days between washes. Washing any sooner than that is only under extreme circumstances. As extreme as going to a smokey bar or bonfire lol.
I won’t even wash it after working out! Unless I’m really sweaty but let’s be real, I’m not running any marathons
Washing your hair is more about your scalp anyway, and that is literally the foundation of your hair.
Leave. It. Alone.
**I do still “shower”, but stick to the neck/face down and keep my hair as dry as possible.
Do not brush dry hair (excessively)
Honestly, I only brush my hair immediately after a full, hair-wash shower. While it’s super damp. And doctored up with conditioner.
Minimal brushing is the name of the game. I used to idolize the likes of Marcia Brady who meticulously brushed her hair 1000 times and it looked so gorgeous. I still might…
But I’ve leaned into my natural waves with the Curly Girl method and let those strands do what they were put on this earth to do.
It might not be my ideal style, but it makes up for it with happy hair.
Brushing is so harsh on our hair, and even the best brushes will do damage. Let it rest. Your hair already wants to fall out, so don’t give it a first class flight to the floor.
Do not use heat products
No blow dryer, no straightener, no curling iron. A girl I knew in college quit using heat products and I adopted that then and there. Haven’t looked back. Great hair.
I’ve dabbled in heatless curls and honestly love themmmm. But my routine is: towel dry, treat with serums/product, air dry. Done.
Less. Is. More.
Let your conditioner work its magic ✨
My conditioning step is the LONGEST step in my shower process. I rush to wash my hair just to get conditioner on there AND THEN I can actually shower. I save all of the “work” of showering until my hair is slathered up with conditioner.
Let it SOAK.
On that note, make sure you wring your freshly washed hair out as much as possible. Since our hair acts like a sponge, you want to drain the water out of it so the conditioner can absorb.
Also not a bad idea to consider pre-shower treatments (like mayo, if you’re into that 🥴) because your hair is already dry and ready to absorb whatever you put on it.
